The families lost virtually everything, even their pets. The silver lining to the story is the community’s willingness to step up and help in a time of need. Over the next few weeks, volunteers and generous people donated time, goods and money to help the families start to rebuild. One of the culminating events took place on June 19th — Sedona Cares Fire Fundraiser.

We were fortunate enough to attend this wonderful event. After a long day of fund raising at the Factory Outlets in the VOC, a primetime performance was held in the Canyon Moon Theater. Many of the local, and extremely talented, musicians and performers took the stage to help the families raise money and to help take their minds off of their recovery efforts for at least one evening.

Living in Sedona for many years, we still seem to be amazed when the community bands together to help others in need. Whether it was Believe in Ashley or any of the other numerous supporting events, Sedona seems to come together to help their own. Of all the reasons we have listed to live in Sedona so far, the strong sense of compassion and cohesiveness make this area more livable than any of the spectacular vistas and other attractions. When talking to most Sedona residents you will find that there are few people who have grown up among the Red Rocks of Sedona AZ. Many people move to Arizona, Sedona in particular, from various places in the U.S. and from across the world. Well not the “Sedona Kids”. Since Sedona Red Rock High School opened its doors in 1995, there has been a special bond between the children growing up in Sedona.

Living in a small town such as Sedona, there are many things to appreciate; adults often see this more clearly than the youth growing up. Whether it be lack of big city knowledge or the longing to go out and experience the world away from the Red Rocks; there’s something unique about the young adults raised here. We saw this so clearly at the 2012 Graduation at Sedona Red Rock High School.

On May 23, the class of 2012 departed from SRRHS and began their future, many travelling to one of the three Arizona Universities: NAU, ASU & U of A. At the commencement ceremony we heard from 5 students who spoke more about their friendships and cherished memories with their fellow students than their futures plans. We found this so heartwarming because unlike most High Schools, Red Rock has a small number of students who sincerely connect with each other.

We also heard from a very proud principal, congratulating his class for making SRHHS an excelling school for another consecutive year. He also spoke to numerous individual students on their achievements, academically & in various extracurricular activities – which is what SRRHS prides itself on.

We feel that SRRHS, as a whole, is a reason to live in Sedona because the teachers have a passion for teaching & mentoring the students, the administration cares enough to know each student personally and the community support allows students to flourish in every aspect of their High School careers.

From the time you first enter the school campus to the last time you walk across the football field, you can feel the warmth of the continuous compassion and love.

As for the Sedona Kids that graduated this year, we applaud you and wish you the very best in life. Like teacher Karyl Goldsmith said, you will miss Sedona, these Red Rocks, and mostly the people in the community. Always know, we love you and forever will welcome you back with open arms.

Sedona did what it does best this weekend with the Cinco de Mayo Festival at Tlaquepaque Arts & Craft Village! Festivities were none less than astounding. Like all things in Sedona, the Cinco de Mayo Festival 2012 was full of elegance, flavorful cuisine & outstanding entertainment and art shows.

The festivities began on Friday, May 4^th, 2012 with Sedona’s monthly First Friday Art Walks. On Saturday morning at 11am, Tlaquepaque was taken over by Mariachi’s who walked the pebble streets of the Village while playing in Calle Independencia. Throughout the day there were various live performances with Mexican influence such as Folklorico Dancers.

This free Sedona event was kid friendly with face painting, Pinata hitting & much more! All in all we recommend for you to plan your Sedona Vacation for next May and don’t miss the Sedona AZ Cinco De Mayo Festival!

Playing on these greens currently costs $99 for 18-holes or $65 for 9-holes. But now you can get some practice & some guidance without breaking your bank.

$10 gets you 60 minutes of instruction on Monday, Wednesday and/or Thursday mornings to work on your swing in a small group setting. Even though you won’t be playing 18-holes you still get the experience of playing golf in beautiful Sedona AZ!

In times of need, the Sedona Community steps up to assist & support those in need. Sedona had to step up last night and support Ashley Hook, a senior at Sedona Red Rock High, and boy did they do a great job!

Ashley Hook was a cheerleader, on the Student Council and played an active part in her school & community until December of last year when she was diagnosed with an aggressive form of ovarian cancer. This beautiful 18 year old girl had to face the hard truth that she would be battling cancer instead of enjoying the remaining part of her senior year of high school. Believe in Ashley, a fundraiser event that took place last night at the Sedona Performing Arts Center in SRRHS, was nothing short of amazing. Believe in Ashley demonstrated just how much the Sedona community and our local High School gives in order to support a community/family member in need. The evening started with a limo (donated by a community member) arriving to Ashley’s house full of Cheerleaders who all got ready together and rode to the event sipping sparkling cider.

The event consisted of:

• An abundant silent auction of items donated from local businesses such as a 7 night stay at any Diamond Resort in the country
• Gourmet food provided by local restaurants
• Encouraging speeches from Ashley’s principal, teachers, coach, & friends
• An incredible concert/performance by various SRRHS musical groups and cheerleaders for the 600+ guests to enjoy.
• Ashley even got up on stage to express her gratitude to everyone involved: Video on Facebook.

Rehearsal for Don't Stop Believing

The inspirational night ended with all groups performing as one to the Journey’s song “Don’t Stop Believing” and then the girls were escorted back into the limo.

One community member stated that the Believe in Ashley event “Rocked the walls of the Sedona Performing Arts Center”, it was a night to remember for all.

From the donation of people’s time to the limo ride and everything in between, this event was truly a display of how our community is irreplaceable in good times and bad. “World-renowned, extraordinary, a must see”! These are some of the phrases heard when discussing These Three Tenors and their performances. Sedona will be hosting the event on the 24^th at 7:00pm in the Sedona Red Rock High School’s Sedona Performing Arts Center.
