Greetings from Sedona Property Partners – Broker/Owners of REMAX Sedona
As most people know, Sedona is the place that is filled with Red Rock Formations, Oak Creek Canyon, and many little swimming holes along the creek! But what most people do not know is that Sedona is located very close to a natural waterfall in the middle of the desert! Reason number 123 to Live in Sedona is that, as Sedona Residents, we are able to go to this waterfall whenever we want. It’s just one short day trip away!
Fossil Creek, the 50 foot waterfall, is located about 60 miles outside of Camp Verde, a neighboring City to Sedona AZ. The as the generations grow old, the youngsters are always told about this little getaway spot. Seniors at Sedona Red Rock High School often have their famous “ditch day” camping at Fossil. Instead of going to Sedona’s crowded tourist swimming holes, the Sedona locals have found that Fossil Creek is a more private swimming area during the hot summer months. And not only does Fossil Creek have a 50 foot waterfall to enjoy, but there are several little spots all along the hike to the waterfall to stop and enjoy the view!
The drive out to Fossil Creek takes about two hours, down a rugged dirt road. Then the hike to the waterfall takes about an hour through the Coconino National Forest. Once you make it, be ready to be awestruck!
Fossil creek (also known as Clear Creek) gets it’s name from its unusually clear water among other swimming holes in the Sedona area that are filled with Red Dirt. Fossil Creek is filled with minerals that enclose sediments that enter the water, forming actual fossils. The water is crystal blue! After you jump off of the waterfall, open your eyes underwater to see all of the fish around you. There is also a waterslide that was naturally formed by slippery rocks located on top of the waterfall, much like Slide Rock State Park. Fossil Creek is a place that we love going to because its the perfect location to spend time with friends and family while escaping the hot Sedona sun!
While the hike to the waterfall can take a while, walk along the creek so that you can stop at the little waterfall first. There is a 10 foot tall smaller waterfall along the way to the main attraction. If it is your first time, don’t be mistaken, there are two waterfalls! Also along the way is a swimming hole with a rope swing that we love to stop by.The best part about the swing is landing is in soft sand and the bottom of the creek! No mud, no weeds or “creepy crawlers”. Just clear water and white sand!
