Greetings from Sedona Property Partners – Broker/Owners of REMAX Sedona
“The first time I encountered one of these extremely unusual beasts, I thought I had just stepped into the scene in Princess Bride with the Rodents of Unusual Size inhabiting the Fire Swamp. I simply couldn’t believe what I was seeing…was it a wild boar? a pig? a rodent? a massive porcupine? or some really obscure hybrid?”
As funny as that sounds, we have heard that from several people! Growing up in the Flagstaff & Sedona area, we see lots of Javelinas. The Javelinas which can be seen rather frequently in and around the Sedona area are from the peccary family, a group of hoofed mammals originating from South America. These strange-looking animals are really no threat to humans or other animals, just your flower garden!
They tend to travel in herds and populate washes in the area. If you are looking for a home in the Sedona area, be prepared to encounter these lovelies. They are interesting and curious to observe and we feel just adds another dimension to our landscape. It is not uncommon to see them crossing the road, taking over the golf course, etc.
They have inspired local artists to create colorful representations which can be found at various locations throughout town, primarily in the uptown shopping and dining district. A fun game we give our visiting friends and family is to have a fun afternoon driving/walking through town trying to spot Javelinas, whether in art or real life. We’ll give you a hint, driving into Uptown Sedona you will see a hot pink javelina statue outside of Pink Jeeps on the right.
Also inspired by our native friends is a local vineyard and winery named Javelina Leap, which has a lovely tasting room on Page Springs Road. Be sure to watch our driving tour of Page Springs Scenery & Wineries.
Please come visit us in Sedona, we are happy to show you around and point out any Javelinas along the way! Contact us via email or phone at 928-282-4166 with any questions or utilize our website’s Sedona Information. We are here to help in all areas of your relocation to Sedona.
